BMI โ Body Mass Index โ is one of the most widely used health screening tools in the world. It gives you a quick snapshot of whether your weight is appropriate for your height. But it has limits, and understanding those limits makes the number much more useful.
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 โ 24.9 | Healthy weight |
| 25.0 โ 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 and above | Obese |
A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy for most adults. That said, these thresholds are general guidelines โ not a diagnosis.
For adults aged 20 and over, the same BMI ranges apply regardless of age or sex. However, some research suggests that older adults (65+) may benefit from a slightly higher BMI, as being underweight carries its own risks โ including muscle loss, weakened immunity and increased fracture risk.
For children and teenagers, BMI is interpreted differently. It uses age and sex-specific percentile charts rather than fixed numbers, because children's bodies are still developing.
BMI is a ratio of weight to height โ it doesn't distinguish between fat, muscle and bone. A professional athlete with high muscle mass might show as overweight despite having very low body fat. Conversely, someone with a healthy BMI could still carry too much body fat in the wrong places.
Other measures worth considering alongside BMI include waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and body fat percentage. A waist measurement above 88cm (35 inches) for women or 102cm (40 inches) for men is associated with increased health risk regardless of BMI.
If your BMI is above 25, small, sustainable changes make the biggest difference over time โ a modest calorie deficit, more walking, and better sleep are a strong starting point. If it's below 18.5, a GP can help rule out any underlying causes and suggest safe ways to gain weight.
BMI is a useful starting point but always worth discussing with a healthcare professional if you have concerns.
๐ก BMI is calculated as: weight (kg) รท height (m)ยฒ. For example, someone who weighs 75kg and is 1.75m tall has a BMI of 75 รท (1.75 ร 1.75) = 24.5 โ in the healthy range.
