About the Tip Calculator
Tipping customs vary significantly between countries. In the UK, tipping in restaurants is optional — around 10–15% is typical for good service, though many people now leave nothing given service charges. In the US, 15–20% is considered standard and near-mandatory in restaurants. Across much of Europe, rounding up the bill or leaving small change is common.
In the UK, a discretionary service charge (often 12.5%) may already be added to your bill — check before tipping further. Under the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023, all tips must be passed to workers in full and cannot be retained by employers.
For large groups, splitting tip proportionally by what each person ordered is fairer than splitting equally. For convenience, splitting the total bill (including tip) equally works well when everyone has ordered similarly.
