Temperature scales explained

Three temperature scales are in everyday and scientific use, and this converter handles all three instantly.

Celsius (°C) is used for weather and cooking across most of the world. On the Celsius scale the freezing point of water is 0°C and the boiling point is 100°C at sea level.

Fahrenheit (°F) is used mainly in the United States. Water has a freezing point of 32°F and a boiling point of 212°F, and normal body temperature is about 98.6°F.

Kelvin (K) is the SI base unit of temperature, used throughout science. It starts at absolute zero — the coldest temperature physically possible — which is 0 K, or −273.15°C. Kelvin uses the same size degree as Celsius but has no negative values and no degree symbol.
